Mental Health Resources

The information posted on this mental health wiki is open for sharing and feedback like additional mental health support options and events is welcome. This is the accomplishment that the LEAP subcommittee and delegates should be proud of. This did not get shut down, thanks to the Virginia PTA who adapted the resolution and passed it unanimously at their annual meeting in Richmond and to the committed subcommittee members.

"Return to Learn" recommendations

The recommendations that the LEAP Executive Committee proposed during September for National Suicide Prevention Week can be found here. These four practical recommendations for helping kids with absences related to a mental illness can be implemented by LCPS and the school board now, without any budget or additional resources. These recommendations may be improved by the subcommittee and additional recommendations may be added.

Mental Health Subcommittee

During our meeting on November 7, 2017 LEAP delegates and parents offered to form a subcommittee to make recommendations for how parents, teachers, LCPS administrators, and the school board can support students with mental health resources. The subcommittee will be performing interviews and research with stakeholders and will work with qualified mental health professionals to propose clear, practical suggestions. Their work will progress and they will present the recommendations to LEAP before the end of the school year.

Meet our subcommittee members:

Victoria Mantyla: Hi! I am happy to be part of this very important Subcommittee! I think communication and collaboration when it comes to our children, teachers and school admin makes for a better community! I am interested in this subcommittee as a parent (I have an 8th grader in LCPS) and as a professional. I have my Masters Degree in Psychology and have worked in the field for over 15 years and realize the importance of dissolving the stigma of mental illness and the role that good mental health plays in quality of life! I hope that we can teach each other and our children that mental health is overall health and that this subcommittee could help do that in some way!

Claudia Matteo: I am eager to contribute to the LEAP subcommittee for mental health through my experiences as a Mental Health First Aider and Wellbeing Champion. I have a Masters of Science (MS) degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Empathy and non-judgmental listening help to motivate people to accept help, so continuous learning and culture are key.
